Lipscomb Moves To NCAA Division I

1999-Present

On May 1, 1999, former Lipscomb President Steve Flatt announced that the Lipscomb Board of Trustees had approved for Lipscomb to move its athletic affiliation from the NAIA to the NCAA at the Division I level. On September 1, 1999, the NCAA granted Lipscomb provisional membership at the Division I level.

Because it was so close to the start of the season, the NCAA also granted Lipscomb dual membership in 1999 to compete in the NAIA and NCAA for the purposes of fielding teams. The Bisons competed as an NCAA provisional Division I team in 1999, but played a full NAIA schedule and were allowed to compete in the NAIA National Tournament. In 2000, the Bisons were allowed to play a mixed schedule of NAIA teams along with NCAA Division I opponents. In 2001, Lipscomb basketball played its first full Division I schedule, and in October of 2001 Lipscomb received membership to the Atlantic Sun Conference beginning in 2003. On September 1, 2003, the NCAA granted Lipscomb active membership allowing all athletic teams to compete for postseason awards both in the Atlantic Sun Conference and in the NCAA National tournaments.

After Lipscomb's transition to Division I, there have been many questions as to when Lipscomb was officially recognized as a Division I member. Because Lipscomb was granted provisional membership into the NCAA Division I in 1999, Lipscomb has decided for history purposes to consider everything from September of 1999 on as the "NCAA ERA." The NCAA Era pertains to all records from 1999 to the present.
