March 3, 2008

The Lipscomb Bisons golf team was confronted with bad weather and a competitive field to close the first round of the second annual Grover Page Classic in first place Monday at the Jackson County Club in Jackson, Tenn.

The Bisons shot 290 in the first round with Cory Parkinson leading the field with a 69 (34-35) and Cody Hale close behind in a tie for second with a 71.

As a team the Bisons are one shot ahead of the host Tennessee-Martin team which fired a 291.

The tournament was moved up to a 7:30 a.m. start in an attempt to avoid the weather. But the first round was filled with delays. There was a 25-minute delay for lightning during morning play after four holes. There was also a delay for 1 ½ hours due to weather conditions with seven holes left to play.

Despite the weather the first round was completed and most teams finished two or three holes in the second round.

The second round is scheduled to continue Tuesday at 9 a.m. The tournament will only be 36 holes due to more expected bad weather Tuesday.

There are 16 teams in the tournament.
